Environmental Health as Public Health
Jill Stewart, Fiona Bushell and Veronica Habgood
It is being increasingly recognised that improving health requires the improvement of individuals' well-being, their communities, their environments, and to reduce the inequality and exclusion that so often confounds efforts. The range of health determinants is vast and no one organisation or professional discipline can deliver public health. Therefore a 'joined-up' approach must be adopted, to increasing the provision of better housing, accessible transport, enhanced community safety, economic opportunities and for developing healthier lifestyles and sustainable environments. To achieve this, public health policy and practice must avoid compartmentalisation and recognise the role of partnership working.
This book sets the agenda and informs the practice of environmental health in modern public health, the case studies clearly demonstrate the important contributions that can be made. It has been written by respected academics engaged in teaching and training both disciplines of environmental health and public health.
