The future

The role of environmental health practitioners is changing. Local government continues to be an important place for EHPs to work, but nowadays they are much more than enforcers of regulations.

The President’s Commission’s " Hanna Report", published in April 2005, assesses the changes that have take place in local government over the last two decades and sets out recommendations on how the environmental health profession can best meet the resulting challenges.

Employment opportunities are widening all the time: CIEH members now work in central government, the armed services, the NHS, in industry and sport.

Environmental health 2012

In 2002 the CIEH and the Health Development Agency published a vision for the development of environmental health over the next 10 years.

"Environmental Health 2012 - A Key Partner in Delivering the Public Health Agenda" examines how the profession can improve the public’s health and reduce inequalities. It envisages that environmental health practitioners will:

  • Play lead roles in local authority community health and wellbeing strategies and contribute to the public health agenda of NHS primary care trusts
  • Become key partners in protecting and improving the health and quality of life of individuals and communities, and reducing health inequalities
  • Tackle the wider determinants of health by identifying, controlling and preventing current and future risks
